Melancthan S. Brown Timeline
From the 1872 Gazetteer
In 1872, M.S. Brown had a postal address in Hankins. He was a farmer who farmed 115 acres. [1]
From the 1875 New York State Census, both the population schedule and the agricultural schedule.
In 1875, Melancthan S Brown and his family lived in a frame house valued at $ 600 in Fremont, Sullivan County, New York. Melancthan, age 44, was a farmer who owned land. He, his wife, Eliza J, age 32, daughter Emma, age 8, and son Frank, age 4, were all born in Sullivan County. [2]
In 1875, M.S. Brown worked a 110 acres farm, with 40 acres of improved land, in Fremont, Sullivan County, New York. His farm was valued at $ 2000, with $ 400 of farm buildings, $ 300 of stock, and $ 100 of tools. He had gross sales of $ 100 from his farm in 1874.
Brown raised many fewer crops than his neighbors. He didn’t plow any land in 1874 or 1875. He had 15 acres in pasture each year, and 20 acres of meadows, which yielded 20 tons of hay. He planted on acre of potatoes each year, harvesting 60 bushels in 1874. His apple orchard had 25 trees.
Brown raised more livestock than some of his neighbors. He had 2 heifer cows in 1873, and 3 in each of 1874 and 1875. He had 2 working oxen or steers. He averaged 3 milch cows in 1874, and had 4 in 1875. His family produced 300 pounds of butter. In 1875, he owned 3 pigs, two born in 1875, one earlier. He slaughtered one pig in 1874 for 300 pounds of pork. In 1874, he sheared 17 sheep, raised 10 lambs, and produced 65 pounds of wool. The following year, he sheared 7 sheep, raised 5 lambs and produced 98 pounds of wool. In 1874, he had 13 sheep killed by dogs. He also had $ 3 of poultry on his farm. [3]
From the 1875 Beers Map of Fremont
M.S. Brown's land appears to be significantly northeast of what I consider to be the town of Hankins. [4]
Based on the location of his land, M.S Brown won't be a high priority for my study of Hankins, New York. If I come across information in records I'm researching, I'm likely to record it, but probably won't be updating this timeline unless I find something that puts him closer to Hankins.
